The choice of the specialty and the university is a responsible and serious matter, because the decision made now will largely shape the future life of the high school student. We often help our students to decide on a university and prepare for admission, and therefore we decided to share our experience and formulated several practical tips:

The first thing

Pay attention to the place of interest of the university in the ratings – local and international. There are the famous rankings the World University Rankings,RAEX,ARWU. It is advisable to compare several ratings: they can take into account different criteria and evaluate them differently. If a university has high places in several ratings at the same time, most likely, it really gives a quality education. The same thing is there when it comes to the film university.

High Interest for the Universities

The University of Interest in the rankings does not occur or is low enough, but does the curriculum look attractive? Find ratings for a particular subject that a graduate plans to study (for example, QS World University Rankings by Subject). Only a few universities are equally strong in teaching, for example, physics and literature, so the ratings for curricula and areas are often more significant.

The Last thing

Finally, the third type of ratings, with which it is important to get acquainted, is the graduate’s employment rating (QS Graduate Employability Rating and others). This is especially true for applied specialties such as management or jurisprudence.

If a graduate plans to enter a non-metropolitan or large city, it is worth knowing more about where the university is located and how large the “student” population is. So, in the UK or Germany there are strong universities located in large cities (Edinburgh, Munich), and there are those that are located in small towns and are, in fact, city-forming. Mainly students and teachers live there, everything is necessary, but the pace of life is much lower than in large cities.

  • Learn more about the successful graduates of the chosen specialty of the university, their scientific, academic and practical activities. This will provide an opportunity to understand what the university is strong in, and, perhaps, to meet with future teachers.
  • Ask about the cost of living in the selected city and relate it to the cost of training. For example, the curriculum in the University of a Small Town itself may cost more, but the cost of living there will be 2-3 times lower than in the capital.

Study in detail the structure of the curriculum of the chosen program : specific subjects, requirements for attendance, the ability to choose courses from other areas of study or take part in academic exchange programs (for example, Erasmus , Erasmus Mundus ) all this can have a huge impact on the course of study and its results .

Yet the best way to learn more about a university is to visit it and see for you how its students live and learn. For example, universities often arrange open days for applicants. If this is not possible, check out the site: many universities now offer virtual tours (for example, the Harvard Virtual Tour).

Pay attention to educational exhibitions and festivals that take place in your city (for example, Education and Career, ICIEP). They can often communicate with representatives of universities.

Finally, when choosing a university, especially a foreign one, it is worth consulting with a specialist consultant for higher education and the choice of profession. He will be able to choose the best options with minimal time and effort.
